Patricio Freire, the Library Coordinator of Yachay Tech University, attended two librarian events in Quito from November 14 to 16, 2018. The first was “The Library and its universes” event, organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Municipality of Quito with regard to the International Book Fair, where Patricio gave a lecture. The second was a meeting held at Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar on the implementation of the Marrakesh Treaty, prepared by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Both meetings took place from November 14 to November 16, 2018.
The purpose of the first meeting was to serve as a meeting platform for national librarians that would allow for the discussion of the library science in the country. Patricio Freire’s talk was called “Libraries in Ecuador and Library Science majors in perspective”. During his presentation, Freire discussed how much library science courses available in Ecuadorian universities are based on the job.
The purpose of the second meeting was to coordinate the implementation of the Marrakesh Treaty, ratified by Ecuador before WIPO. The Treaty seeks to facilitate access to published works for persons who are blind, visually impaired, or otherwise print disabled. The meeting was organized by the National Service of Intellectual Rights (SENADI in Spanish). WIPO authorities, representatives from international organizations, authorized entities, civil society organizations, authorities of public institutions, and representatives of the beneficiaries of the Treaty were present at the event.
