Carlos Catillo-Chavez, rector, and Spiros Agathos, dean, participated in different conversatories in the coast city.
Spiros Agathos, Dean of the School of Biological Science and Engineering, and Carlos Castillo-Chávez, Rector of Yachay Tech, were in Guayaquil during the week of July 10th to 14th, 2017. They were both invited by the University of Guayaquil and the University of Arts. In both cases the authorities gave lectures in the frame of collaboration activities with both Guayas institutions. Spiros Agathos gave the principal lecture of the 1st. International Cogress of Medical Genetics and Health Applied Biotechnology. On the other hand, Carlos Castillo-Chavez gave a lecture on a discipline encounter with Ramiro Noriega, University of Arts rector; plus he also gave a small talk during the congress at Guayaquil University.
In his lecture Castillo-Chavez discussed the relation between arts and mathematics, form proportions, geometry and dimensions, to infinity concepts, space-time disambiguation and music harmony. He also discussed the applications of mathematics in other fields such as biology and epidemiology.
Both professors were also invited to Guayaquil University, where the min speaker at the international congress was Spiros Agathos. The topic of the lecture was: “Bioprocess Engineering of Stem Cells: Barriers and Progress towards Clinical Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) Production and Clinical Applications”. In his lecture, Agathos used the experiences and advances made by his Bioengineering research team in Belgium to develop new enabling technologies for stem cells. Stem cells, are progressively becoming an essential tool for a range of biomedical applications including drug discovery, disease modeling, and tissue engineering.
Finally, during the visit, Carlos Castillo-Chavez held a meeting with the parents of Yachay Tech’s Guayaquil students.
