Students Camila Velastegui, Candy Herrera, Doménica Garzón, and Jennifer Sánchez will participate in the summer program of the Mathematical and Theoretical Biology Institute.
June 6, 2019
Four Yachay Tech students were awarded a scholarship to participate in the summer program of the Mathematical and Theoretical Biology Institute (MTBI) at Arizona State University (ASU). The program will last two months, until July 27, 2019. Doménica Garzón and Jennifer Sánchez, from the School of Physical Sciences and Nanotechnology, and Candy Herrera and Camila Velastegui, from the School of Biological Sciences and Engineering, will work on collaborative research projects with other undergraduate students.
MTBI is an intensive experience that prepares undergraduate students to do rigorous research comparable to graduate research in the fields of mathematics and statistics related to biological and social sciences. Participants will work in a collaborative environment with graduate students, postdoctoral students, and academic visitors. These groups will address research problems that they have selected themselves and will be under the supervision of faculty and mentors of postdoctoral students. The program is divided into class instruction and research practices.
By the end of the summer, the four students must have completed a technical report and a research poster. The idea is that upon completion of the program, participants have all the necessary resources for a high-quality presentation at any national or international conference. Domenica, Jennifer, Candy, and Camila are part of the more than 50 Yachay Tech students who will travel this summer to carry out research stays, internships, and summer programs abroad.
