Spiros N. Agathos, Ph.D., rector of Yachay Tech University, attended the ASM Microbe 2019, a gathering of the members of the American Society for Microbiology that took place in San Francisco, USA, from June 21 to June 23, 2019.
Spiros Agathos was officially welcomed as member of the American Academy of Microbiology, the honorific group of the ASM. The formal ceremony took place in the evening hours of Friday, June 21. The rector was introduced by Dr. Arturo Casadevall, Chair of the Board of Governors of the American Academy of Microbiology, and Dr. Michele Swanson, President of the American Society for Microbiology. Spiros Agathos is the first scientist living in Ecuador to receive such distinction.
In January 2019, Spiros N. Agathos was appointed Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM), the honorific leadership group within the American Society for Microbiology. Being a Fellow indicates recognition of distinction of a scientist by their peers, and it is one of the highest honors in the field of Microbiology. Agathos is the first in Ecuador and fourth in Belgium, where he still holds an honorary affiliation, to receive a fellowship of the AAM.
During the ASM Microbe 2019, the Rector of Yachay Tech University was introduced as Fellow and he will be able to begin collaborations with the top-level scientists that form the Society. This accomplishment is the result of the research work conducted by Spiros Agathos, who has also contributed to the development of research at Yachay Tech University and the School of Biological Sciences and Engineering.
