The exhibition of scientific photographs also prompted a visit from the Spanish Embassy.
On Friday, February 23, 2018, Yachay Tech University welcomed the First Secretary of the Spanish Embassy, Dr. Ignacio Garrido, for the opening of Fotciencia, an itinerant exhibition of scientific photographs that was brought to Ecuador by the Embassy. The exhibition is an initiative of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, the Superior Council of Scientific Investigations and the Jesus Serra Foundation. The 20 photographs portrayed in the exhibition are divided into four categories: health, biology, energy, and water, and they were all winners of a contest in Spain. The exhibition includes a photograph taken by Yachay Tech student Ariana Rivera, who won the contest in the University. All the scientific photographs are portrayed next to a brief description or comment about the scientific fact that they illustrate.
Garrido assures that the objective of the event is to bring science and citizens together through an artistic and esthetic view, as the promotion of culture and scientific education are essential in our current society. Ariana River agrees. In her opinion, art and science together can delight us in unexpected ways. The exhibition is portrayed every year in the most important museums, science centers, universities and cultural centers in Spain.
Aside from opening the exhibition, Garrido visited Yachay Tech University and held a meeting with the Deans of all 5 Schools and some Spanish faculty. For him it was quite interesting to learn about the fields of research that faculty work on and to propose research possibilities showing the areas that research institutions develop in Spain. Garrido concluded that cooperation between the Spanish Embassy and Yachay Tech University will continue. He hopes to be able to connect the research interests of our faculty with those of Spanish universities.
