The Genetics and Genomics Network held its first meeting

The ReGG Network involves academics from different institutions who seek to promote research in these fields.

At the beginning of 2018, researchers from Yachay Tech, INIAP, INABIO, Universidad Tecnológica Equinoccial (UTE), Red Cross, Universidad San Francisco de Quito and the Ecuadorian Society of Human Genetics came together to make up the Genetics and Genomics Network. Its main goal is to be a space for researchers to collaborate and take part in international grants with joint projects. In addition, they hope to document the state of research in Genetics and Genomics in the country, contrast research ideas, plan national meetings and give visibility to research in these two fields in the country through interaction with international organizations of this type.

The first ReGG meeting took place on April 26, 2018. During this meeting, the participants, all from different institutions, appointed a temporary Board for the Network and delegated the Presidency to Jürgen Reichardt, Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation of Yachay Tech University, the Vice Presidency to Representatives of the National Biodiversity Institute (INABIO) and the Technical Secretariat to the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIAP).

This temporary Board will serve for the legal conformation of the academic conglomerate and the establishment of by-laws. The network is just in an initial stage, and they hope to be able to settle better in the coming months to start collaboration immediately. The meeting was also good to study the Manifesto of the Network from a technical perspective and a proposal was submitted to SENESCYT for public policies related to research in Genetics and Genomics in the country.
